Tenterden and District
Chamber of Commerce is a long established organisation, originally known as
Tenterden Chamber of Trade. Since then many local business men and women have
devoted their time and expertise to further expansion of the Chamber and
advancement of the businesses in Tenterden and district.
The object of
the Chamber is to promote and support the general and commercial interests of
the town of Tenterden and district. The Chamber has had representatives on many
town organisations: more recently the Tenterden Appraisal Group, the Tenterden
Town Millennium Group, the Town Centre Management Group and the Tenterden
Farmers' Fayre.
Over the years it has organised various events aimed at
bringing business into the town, for example the late night shopping evening
which is held on the first Friday in December. Also, the town's Christmas
lights are organised and partially funded by the Chamber's members. The most
significant achievement was probably made by the Town Management Group, who in
conjunction with Ashford Borough Council and Tenterden Town Council was
instrumental in bringing CCTV to the town centre. The Chamber representatives
made a major contribution to this project.
The Chamber closely follows
planning applications in the area and will often lobby support, advise the
members and mediate between members and major retailers wishing to establish
new outlets in Tenterden. The members are kept up to date with these and other
issues affecting them through regular newsletters which are published quarterly
and sometimes more often if the need arises. Members solely fund the Chamber
and all activities are business driven.
