Modern and well equipped

The Tenterden Gateway has a modern well equipped Changing Place that allows access for people with complex physical needs, their carers and families. Standard disabled toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability – or their carers.

Extra features and more space

People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as other serious impairments such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis or an acquired brain injury, often need extra facilities to allow them to use the toilets comfortably. Changing Places are different to standard disabled toilets with extra features and more space to meet these needs.

The right equipment

• a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench

• a tracking hoist system, or mobile hoist if this is not possible

Enough space

• adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers

• a centrally placed toilet with room either side for the carers

Voyager Overhead Hoist

The Voyager Overheard Hoist has been installed to make sling transfers easy. The hoist will only work safely with slings that are attached with loops and not with slings attached with plastic clips. The hoist can carry a load of 37 stones and has a powered lift as well as a powered drive. Please note that no slings are provided within the Changing Place suite.

To operate the hoist please use the handset that is connected to the hoist body by means of a curly cable. On the handset are seven buttons to operate the hoist.

Height adjustable shower table

The height adjustable shower table is provided to give you somewhere safe to change and shower. The table is rated to carry up to 30 stones, and consists of a perforated vinyl stretcher mounted on a motorised lift body.

The vertical height adjustment is carried out using the remote handset, which will be found hanging on the bodt of the table.

With the cable at the bottom of the handset, two buttons marked with arrows designate which way the table will travel.

You may find the table folded. If so, it will be secured using a small plastic slip located at its uppermost edge. Removing this will allow the table section to be dolfed down for use. Take care during this operation, as although the table is counterbalanced, it may be quite heavy.

Folding the table is useful should you need extra space or ir you feel the table needs draining. However, please unfold the table before leaving the facility as the next user may not be able to unfold the table easily.

Safe use of the shower unit

1. Maximum hot water temperature is set at 43deg C

2. Ensure that water reaches safe temperature whilst shower head directed away from person

3. Ensure changing table is rinsed down thoroughly after use

4. Rinse down any adjacent areas, leaving clean surfaces for next person

5. If water temperature fluctuates please notify a Customer Service Officer at the reception desk at the front of the building
