The Tenterden and District Local History Society

Founded 25 November 1955

OUR PROGRAMME FOR 2011/2012

The first speaker in September will be Dr John Woodward talking about the fascinating history of Hythe. He conducts guided walks in the town, and will surely inspire us to give it a visit in the near future!  In October our own Dr Jack Gillett will select and show a variety of his collection of photos of Tenterden. Is it a pub crawl?  The November talk, by member Fred Walker, will be about The English Channel. There are sure to be lots of interesting stories and facts about the history and geography (and ships) of this important seaway.   In January, we welcome back Judith Shaw. Following her fascinating talk about garden history last year, she has been persuaded to return and talk about the timber framed buildings in our town. Mr Monty Parkin is also making a return visit in February. His talk, Women in Print, will focus on how women have been portrayed in prints and adverts over the years.   The AGM in March will be followed by Mr Jeremy Hodgkinson, renowned archaeologist, sharing his knowledge of the Wealden Iron Industry.  The final event of the season will be in April.  Mr Gerald Webber and a team of colleagues from the Museum will present a selection of unusual/odd/puzzling items from the collection and invite us to choose the correct answer from a selection of unlikely possibilities.  I hope that there is something in this programme for everyone to enjoy. I always appreciate feedback from members about the talks we have and I am pleased to receive recommendations of speakers you may have heard elsewhere.

SUBSCRIPTIONS:   The Annual Subscription is £6.  Guests and Visitors will continue to be welcome at any meeting on payment of £3.  Annual subscriptions are due at the first meeting in September.

MEMBERSHIP:   If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining, please encourage them to do so or ask the Secretary to send them a copy of the Programme. Perhaps members may be able to offer lifts to near neighbours?  Please offer to help if you have room in your car.

COFFEE MORNING SOCIALS:  We hope that members will come to the social events and bring their friends.  Members who find it difficult to come to the evening meetings will be especially welcome so as to keep in touch with the Society.  Local history scrapbooks have been maintained for over 50 years and these will be on display.  The Scrapbooks make a fascinating record of events as seen at the time by local newspapers and periodicals and photographs.

SOCIETY’S LIBRARY:  Our collection of books, papers, etc. on local history is stored in the Museum. These can be made available to members on request. Please apply to Dr J Gillett.

PUBLICITY:  Notices of events are placed in the Parish Magazine, Wealden Advertiser, Kentish Express (Emma Isworth’s Tenterden Column), The Journal of Kent History and other periodicals. Further information can be found on the Tenterden Website: www.tenterdentown/history-society

THE JOURNAL OF KENT HISTORY

This is published twice a year by The Kent History Federation, of which we are members. It contains a wide selection of articles and items of interest, as well as details of events and talks in Kent. The cost is £2 per issue. Orders can be placed with Mrs Eleanor Bliss.

TENTERDEN MUSEUM:  Do support the Museum in the Car Park in Station Road - it is well worth a visit.  Please contact the Curator (Tel. 01580 763286) if you would be willing to help as a volunteer at the Museum.

RESEARCH: Mr Colin Young has now taken over from Mr Alec Laurence as our Genealogist and Researcher. He can be contacted via   e-mail:  colinyoung2@tiscali.co.uk

Information is also available from him about the various burial places in the town, including names, dates and sites.

TOWN WALKS: These fascinating guided walks of Tenterden can be arranged for clubs, societies or small groups. Tours last for about an hour and cost £2 per person. They can be tailored to suit your needs. For more information, please contact Mrs Jean Sugden (Tel: 01580 765581).

OUTINGS: Our grateful thanks to Mr Martin Homewood for organising our outings in the past. Welcome to Mrs Kathy Corby, who will be arranging these visits for members in future.

Chairman’s message

An excellent year has passed with some very good talks. One or two speakers will be asked back soon. Our redoubtable Outings Secretary, Martin Homewood, has passed the baton to Kathy Corby. The Society thanks them both. After about twenty three years responding to the genealogical queries that come to Tenterden in profusion from around the world, Alec Laurence, our President, has passed this duty on to the very capable Colin Young, who is also a mine of information on this topic. There are an astonishing number of places among the continents where our lovely town is held in high regard and in family memory. The Officers and Committee of our Society have continued to put in sterling work and we remain very solvent despite rapidly-escalating costs for speakers. Despite problems with dates, venue and clashes with Easter, our attendance has held up very well and the Coffee Mornings seem to have settled into the change of weekday.

“If men learnt from history, what lessons it might teach” (Coleridge)

Best wishes to you all

Nick Hudd
