Tenterden ~ Avallon
Tenterden is twinned with Avallon in Burgundy, France. The Twinning Association was formed in 1989, following the signing of the Twinning Charter between the Town Councils of Tenterden and Avallon.
Aims
Our aims are to promote and organise exchanges of residents and friends between Tenterden and Avallon and to encourage commerce and friendship within and between townspeople. We organise exchange visits generally on a biennial basis, a party from Avallon coming to Tenterden one year, hosted by members of the Tenterden & District Twinning Association (TDTA) and a return visit to Avallon the following year. Our next visit to Avallon will be from Friday, 18th May, to Monday, 21st May, 2012. All members, new or old, will be welcomed by French families. Assuming there are sufficient numbers, most of us will be travelling by coach directly from Tenterden, but some will choose to drive or travel by train.
Membership is open to residents of Tenterden and the surrounding area.
Language
Knowledge of French is not essential. However, the effort to speak their language will be welcomed by the people of Avallon. If you wish to improve your French, there is a discussion group, www.LearnRealFrench.co.uk which meets in Tenterden on Tuesday evening. The Weald U3A also has a group for its members.
Avallon
Perched on rocky granite and surrounded by terraced gardens, the City of Avallon is located in the heart of Burgundy and dominates the Cousin Valley. The 15th century clock tower opens its doors to the historic area of the City with its ancient houses, towers, bastions and watchtowers while the collegiate church of Sainte-Lazarre reflects the architecture of the 12th century with its two Romanesque doorways and twisted columns. The Cousin Valley and the Morvan Park which surrounds Avallon had mills and tanneries still operating until the 20th century.
New Members
New Members of TDTA are most welcome. Membership per annum:
£5.00 per person
£12.50 for families
