Who we are
The Weald of Kent Protection Society (WKPS) is a non-political environmental pressure group, registered charity 261992.
Our main aims
We have three main aims:
-
To protect and enhance the character and environment of the Wealden towns, villages and countryside
-
To safeguard the amenities of the Weald of Kent
-
To cultivate a wider interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the Weald of Kent
To carry out these aims, WKPS works to encourage stricter enforcement of planning legislation, works closely with official bodies in Town and Country planning matters and attends public enquiries, organise meetings, exhibits, lectures, promotes activities of a charitable nature and works to arouse, and inform public opinion and debate.
What we do
WKPS scrutineers review every planning application issued by the 3 local authorities in the area (Ashford, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Borough Councils). Where judged necessary, we make constructive comments aimed at the enhancement/improvement of an application; in some cases, relatively few, we will oppose it if we feel that the application conflicts with an existing plan, policy or law.
Others examine proposed legislation regarding developments at local, county and national level, participating fully on behalf of members. We also mount a series of social and public events and publish a newsletter, Watch on the Weald, three times a year.
Why join us
Our credibility, experience and knowledge have repeatedly proved invaluable since we were founded in 1960. We are an all-volunteer organisation, so need active members to give life and force to our efforts. Please support us – you might need us one day!
Each member is entitled to:
-
Information on planning and development matters
-
Involvement in local and national consultations on planning and environmental issues
-
Updates on proposals affecting your community
